donyale luna was the first african american fashion model to appear on the cover of vogue magazine. she had a troubled upbringing marked with violence (her father was murdered by her mother when she was 18) but after she was discovered by a photographer she moved to new york city to pursue modeling.

her life was always interesting, as she appeared in films for legendary directors like federico fellini and carmelo bene.  sadly she died very  young, at age 33 of an accidental drug overdose in rome.  she was one of two african american girls to be a part of andy warhol’s factory and her fashion photos and style continue to last from generation to generation.
