DIY tapestry headboard

Share

moving into a full size house in LA after leaving our tiny, two-bedroom, lower east side, NYC pad was really exciting for me and my roommate. but then, when we moved into our hollywood house, it got even better… we have an extra room! we struggled at first to decide what purpose it should serve, and ultimately we decided on an extra bedroom for guests… we’re such grown-ups!

we call it “the virgin room” because it is filled with virgin mary stuff… yes, we have an obsession (see here).  anyways, that is besides the point… this post is about the fabric headboard we made.  instead of using a decorative blanket ON your bed, why not use it BEHIND or ABOVE your bed?!

for this project, all you need is:

  • a hammer
  • fabric
  • nails!

we decided on this awesome Moroccan-y, colorful blanket as the backboard.  we hammered it to the top of the wall, and then extended it out over the bed so it creates a little cave.

this is a super fast and easy way to decorate your bedroom (or your guest bedroom) and spice it up with some color or fun fabric that would otherwise be used on a bed! a great for a kids room toomaybe get a cloud print and create an airy canopy that feels like your sleeping in the clouds!

DYING for that Moroccan blanket. Where in the hell did you find it?

The blanket is called a Suzani -- I would try eBay or just typing in "Suzani" on Google! Hope that helps 🙂

ahh i love that idea! i cant do it though :< my nose is extremely sensitive to dust and fur and stuff, which is such a pity because that would look amazing in any room!

WHERE DID YOU FIND THAT BLANKET!!!! I've been searching forever 🙁

5

how many yards did you use for that?  LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!

6

around 4 yards should work well depending on how much ceiling you want to cover. xo!

Oh well, looks lovely!

This isn't DIY if you have to buy the fabric already made. "Hang this up" isn't DIY.

Would tack pins work? I'm moving into a college dorm and I'd hate to make big holes from the nails in the walls of the ceiling. I have a light weight tapestry instead of a blanket because im going for that "starry night" theme, which im not sure can uphold the materials

They could if you use enough of them and the fabric is lightweight enough. I also really like Command Strips for hanging things when you don't want to ruin the walls. Make sure you get the kind that can be removed and they have hooks that attach so you could sew or pin some loop tabs onto the fabric and hang it on various Command hooks placed around. Something like these decorating clips could work well too: http://fave.co/1I8xY8P - good luck and have fun at college! Xo

I love this so much, but how did you ever find that blanket/tapestry that was the right size? I have been looking forever and they have either been too small or costed a ridiculous amount of money.
