DIY colorful pastel chalk tips hair tutorial

Share

it’s true, i did not create the technique of chalking your hair (chalk tips) but i have wanted to try it for a long time thus, i figured i should do it on camera for you guys! i love how it turned out and i felt like a mermaid…which is kind of a lifelong dream of mine.

DIY Colofrul (Pastel) Hair Tips Using Soft Pastels AKA Fancy Chalk

Prep It:

  • get soft pastels from the art store or online – i used pastel colors by Sennelier
  • if you’re brunette or have black hair, a spray bottle with water
  • hair spray – optional to seal color

DO IT!:

  1. take about a half inch piece of hair and twist the ends
  2. *if you’re brunette, have black hair or dark red hair, spray the ends with your water bottle to moisten.
  3. use the chalk to dispense the pigment up and down the area of hair you want colored
  4. shake off the excess chalk (PS – wear something old while you’re chalking in case any falls and stains).
  5. optional: seal in with hairspray – i didn’t do this step and the chalk stayed really well and didn’t get on my clothes at all!

I had a question... what video-editing-program do you use?? ;))

Author2

our videographer Brad uses Final Cut : )

3

Is there any way to make it stay in longer besides the water?

Author4

not really - if you want a longer lasting solution you could try food coloring or actual semi-permanent dye. xx

5

If you flat iron the hair after chalking it lasts days 🙂

6

Your hair looks awesome!

Author7

 thank you! ; )

8

How long does it last?

Author9

if you do it on dry hair it will last one wash - on damp hair it will last two or three washes. xx

10

Would any brand pastels work? =]

Author11

Yes it would however some nicer (more expensive) brands of pastels have more intense pigment so the color will be richer. Thanks! xx

12

does it look okay in straight hair???? I love this!!!!!!!!!!!!

Author13

Yes! It looks great on straight hair! Try it! xx

14

will it work on dark hair?

Author15

yeah try using white or try wetting the tips of your hair or the chalk first to make the pigment more intense. It will show up on dark hair then! thanks!! xx

16

It works on any kind. But if you want more colour than it is you can put white first

17

Do hard-ish pastels work? Or do they have to be super-soft???

18

hard-ish pastels will work but not as well. you might want to do some shavings off them and mix with water. xx

I have light, light brown hair (almost like a gold color) and I go to a high school that forbids hair dying!! I was wondering how many days does this last because I want to do it over the weekend and my hair to be back to normal on Monday?

20

It will mostly wash out with one shampoo and if there is any slight color remaining you can just do a double shampoo. I say DO IT! xx

i have a question. Wat kind of chalk are u using? Does only haor chalk work or do any kind like blkboard chalk work too? Sry if its silly but im confused and curious

Hi! It's much better to use pastel chalks that you get at the art supply store than regular sidewalk or blackboard chalk. If you go into any arts supply store and ask for chalk pastels they will show you. You can also order them here: http://rstyle.me/~4xPAT hope that helps! xo
