last year, my roommate Philippa made a short film for her senior thesis. in the film the main character had an obsession with painting virgin mary figurines so over a period of a month or so, we hand-painted over 100 virgins. (they were based on the drawing of our lady of guadalupe) after the film was finished, we couldn’t just throw them away, so we now have a ridiculous amount of the virgins around our house…us excluded.
while none of us are very religious, my roommates and i all have a thing for religious memorabilia. the figurines are in use as: bookends, as decoration in the backyard garden, and in our (unusable) fireplace.
this proves that almost all objects, even if there are hundreds of them, are multifunctional – you just have to be creative and make it work for you! if you have collections of things, use them as decorative objects. but use them wisely and in a funky way, otherwise it could quickly get to crazy-old-lady status – kinda like this or this. check out this Apartment Therapy post on Decorating With Collections for some useful tips on how to tastefully display your collectables.
