in the south bronx, an area with a high number of underprivileged youth, the Cloud Institute for Sustainability Education launched a program to teach south bronx kids about ecosystems and where their food actually comes from. i was lucky enough to meet leah mayor, the head of the cloud institute, and a major player in the sustainability education movement. they installed 15 chicken coops in the back of the building where the students water the hens, feed them and collect their eggs.
from this program, st. augustine kids learn about the importance of responsibility and gain a feeling of connectedness with the chickens and with each other. another benefit of this program is the environmental values it instill in the students.
hopefully, these programs will become a staple within the school systems across the united states. programs like this have already sprung up in the united kingdom and other countries.
