Saran Yen is currently a student at Konstfack Design School in Stockholm. originally from Thailand, Saran is focusing on social class struggles and tension and his most recent project “Cheap Ass Elites” is a commentary on this topic. he is attempting to blend “high” society and “low” society through furniture.
he states, ”Combining mass-produced household objects and plastic items with rich elements, the installation sarcastically illustrates and questions what society’s indoctrination is really built on. This project is a critic on the gap between the rich and the poor, good taste and bad taste and social hierarchy in modern society.”
he chose a chair for this project because a chair is a common object across classes and it is a object used for communication. his goal was to juxtapose classically expensive furniture styles like the Louis armchair, with mass-produced household items.
bluntly put, ” This project is an illustration of a world where there’s no rich ass or poor ass. An ass is an ass.”
