because of the obvious lack of ground level space for parks and gardens in new york city, they have to resort to transforming their roofs into private (or public) oases. during summer in new york, rooftop barbeques and bars are pretty much the only places to be. i have complied pictures of the most beautiful roofs that i would like to own, with some pictures of roofs that i have spent time on! roofs are one thing i really miss about nyc.
photographer charles de vaivre did a project on nyc rooftops, capturing beautiful roofs adjoined to apartments. here are some of my favorite photographs from his portfolio:
the soho house boasts a pretty awesome view. i went swimming here once when i used to live in ny.
while these are amazing roofs… there are also the other kind of “normal” roofs, which i still love! this was on my friend’s roof in the east village, we took the puppies upstairs to run around.
another great part of those “normal people” roofs is rooftop picnics! this was right before i left new york to move back to LA!
be sure to check out my post on specifically green roofs here!
