Designer Mieke Meijer uses a special kind of wood for her furniture products, decorative items and jewelry — wood made of newspaper! it’s made from endless stacks of old newspapers and can be cut, milled and sanded just like normal wood.
Meijer created NewspaperWood as a class project. she saw how wood was being transformed into paper but not vise versa. her project became about upcycling the wood back to it’s original state. the technique she uses involves gluing the pieces together very tightly so that they form a log.
she showed NewspaperWood to a Dutch design firm called Vij5 and they partnered to create a line of products made out of her material. they collaborated with a group of young and excited designers and let them work hands on with this upcycled material to make their own newspaper wood creations. i think it looks pretty great!
