after hurricane Irene swept through the east coast, a huge number of local and organic farms in new york were hit hard and 10 of them have lost 70 to 100 percent of their crops. many of these farms and farmers do not have the means to rebuild, which is why people are coming together in many different ways to lend these people a hand.
Dine Out Irene is an event taking place on this Sunday, September 25th that includes over 100 restaurants who will donate 10 percent of their profits to benefit the farmers.
click here for the entire list of participating restaurants for this event. alongside Dine Out Irene, Bloggers Without Borders is encouraging new yorkers to have dinner parties and potlucks made of only local food and Greenmarket ingredients. this supports the farms that still have enough crops to sell. the bloggers will then blog about their dinner, highlighting which ingredients they used and from which farm.
another way to help these devastated farms is through growNYC -a hands-on non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for new yorkers through environmental platforms. part of their mission is to provide healthy and fresh foods through greenmarkets as well as grow and maintain nyc community gardens. in the wake of Irene, 100% of all their donations are going to farmers hurt by hurricane Irene!
