every year during Holy Week, over two million people walk through the Jalisco Mountains in Mexico. La Ruta del Peregrino (or The Pilgrim’s Route) is an extremely profitable event for the poor villagers who live in the mountains year round. because of this, the government has commissioned architects and designers to build nine stopping points along the route.
the starting point is in the town of Ameca and the final destination is the Rosario Virgin in Talpa de Allende. the entire route runs 117 km and the walk takes you all the way up to an altitude of 2000 meters.
the architects and artists chosen were as follows: Ai Weiwei, Derek Dellekamp, Elemental, HHF Architects, Tatiana Bilbao. the sanctuaries and shelters provide a resting spot and viewing point for walkers.
