kumi yamashita: where patience is virtuous

i severely lack the ability to sit for long periods of time… perhaps it is my undiagnosed A.D.H.D… but after finding Kumi Yamashita, who has delivered the epitome of patience, i am rethinking my lunch of swedish fish. in her collection “Constellation” she uses the simplest items. pins. thread. canvas. easy right?  hah. each portrait uses ONE SINGLE SEWING THREAD.

Kumi (we are on a first name basis now), studied at the Glasgow School of Art and is currently residing in New York, post Scotland, and post childhood in Japan. obvious influences of all three countries are present in her work if you take a deeper look.

next time you are in New York, walk on over to Chelsea, have a quick bevy where Patti and Robert once drank, then stop at Dillion Gallery which is housing these pieces for a bit longer.
