whimisical and bright girl’s room design from Home Made Simple

One of my favorite rooms I’ve ever designed is the subject of an episode of Home Made Simple that aired this Saturday, March 9th at 9am/8c on OWN. It’s a whimsical and vintage inspired room, with accents of electric color… all created for an adorable little girl, Maya, who’s ready to move out of her nursery in the master bathroom (for real) and into her own ‘big girl’ room! I used the free-hand-painted wall stripes like I did on my living room statement wall but this time in a vintage rose and white! See some of the other Before and Afters from my past episodes here and check out for more info on the episode and the projects below…

The inspiration for this room was for Maya to have a girl’s room suitable for a two year old but something she could grow with as well… and, her parent’s didn’t want the traditional pink ‘girl’s’ room palette. Thus, I chose muted, vintage-whimsy walls with pops of electric color mixed with vintage-chic floral patterns.

As you can see I used the existing beige base wall color as one color for the free-hand stripes and then we painted white and a dusty rose color smaller stripe over to create this three-tone stripe pattern. Anyone can do this with a paintbrush and without painter’s tape or a tape measure – the organic, wavy lines is part of the whimsical design! See more on The bed is an extendable toddler’s bed from Ikea which came white but I had us paint it in a fun, electric green color. The bedding (also from Ikea) brought a nice vintage-floral contrast to the lime green bed and fun toys. Juxtaposition at it’s most fun!

Maya’s parents rocked her to sleep in an old glider chair so I decided to incorporate it into the design but update it by using a new, hip chair, fastened to the old glider base. More info on

The hopscotch patterned rug I hand-painted on a natural fiber (sisal), store-bought rug. Watch the video above for the steps and check out for more.

We turned an old wooden ladder into a colorful shelf by splatter painting it and cutting wood to fit over the steps and rungs of the ladder. More info on the steps on

The curtains in the room BEFORE were still in good shape so we kept them but I spruced them up with some fabric flowers. We just cut the flowers from a floral fabric and fabric glued them to the curtains to create our own floral print!

Some plastic animals, cut in half and spray-painted gold and glued to a frame become art! Full step by step here on

And driftwood (grapevine wood) with a store-bought ceiling lamp, some wire and chain becomes a custom chandelier! See the how-to on

For a special frame cluster I used the photos of Maya’s mom and Grandma, as little girls on the phone, as the inspiration for a photo shoot we did with Maya on a cell phone! Framed all in similar frames (painted with our color palette) you immediately see the commonality between the photos and it becomes a multi-generational art wall! See more photos and info on

Tune in to Home Made Simple Saturday’s at 9am/8am central on OWN to watch the transformation and get all kinds of helpful tips to get the look for your room!…I know I really want a driftwood chandelier and animal butts art of my own, heck, I want an electric green toddler bed too!

Wow! Impressive! Lots of wonderful ideas!Where did you get the plastic toy animals used for the wall art picture?

I couldn't find how to on this project ;( Thank You

Love the room! Do you still have the tutorial for the glider? I can't find it anywhere. I got the chair and the glider.

Hi Liz!
Here's a tutorial I found:
If it doesn't work for your chairs, just try googling "turn a chair into a glider".
Happy decorating!

That is so cut

I love everything about this room!! Where do you buy the furniture?? I really want to makeover my room now haha. I really love the ladder shelves, that would be a great DIY!

I think it's fabulous! There are so many smart details- the glider, ladder shelves and the muted stripes that complement the neon pops of color. Where did the friendly vegetables come from? They are so great!
