OMG We Bought A House!

Yaaay Mr. Kate moves! I’m so excited to share with you the first episode of OMG We Bought A House! – a series Joey and I are doing about buying, renovating, moving in and decorating our first home! This is the first episode where we give you the tour of our house before we paint and move in. You get to see it in its “before” state, bars and all!

We fell in love with this vintage house and I love that it hasn’t been updated in a while so we can carefully infuse our own style and make it perfect for us. Watch the video and leave a comment letting us know what aspects of the house re-do you want to see in the upcoming episodes because we have a lot to do and we want you to enjoy the process along with us!

The house is in the mid city area of Los Angeles and was built in 1927. The style is English Storybook and I’m excited to make it look more English cottage style by painting the exterior and changing the landscaping, maybe even add a picket fence? First order of business is to remove the bars on the windows!

The living room has an awesome barrel ceiling and stucco walls with a fireplace and narrow plank hardwood floors throughout…obviously we need to paint!

The dining room has more of the faux finish paint that we’re going to paint over but it has a great big window, tray ceilings and more hardwood floors!

The master bedroom is huge and has amazing french doors out to the backyard and deck. More tray ceilings and hardwood floors although I want to refinish these because they’re too red and shiny! We’ll also paint in here to cover the green color.

We need to expand the master closet and put in a better storage system ASAP for all my clothes and shoes…oh, and Joey’s too.

The master bathroom is the first place I want to renovate after the closet. It was an addition in the 1960′ and doesn’t have the charm I want. I’d love to put in a claw foot tub to bring in a more vintage feel.

The kitchen is south facing so it gets consistent sunlight throughout the day. Eventually we may update it but for now I like the white tiles and the vintage stove.

The kitchen connects to a little hexagon shaped breakfast nook that has a peaked ceiling. I can’t wait to put in a cute little round table and update the light fixture.

The guest bathroom is original to the 1920’s with black and white and mosaic tile floors. I love the style and just want to update the wall color and sink vanity, etc.

The guest room is a nice size with good light, hardwood floors and tray ceilings. The orange color has to go and we’ll probably make it a combo bedroom/office or something.

The backyard! It has a lot of potential and some great existing foliage. We are not sure what to do with the pond, would love to hear from you guys as to what you think we should do with it. The two car garage will be for storage for now and then maybe convert it later.

So that’s the first glimpse of our cute house! As you can see we have a lot of work to do. Make sure you comment and let us know what you want to see us document in the upcoming episodes! We’re actively moving and filming and we want to hear what you think and what you want to see. Thanks for watching!

Hey Kate!
I really love these series!
But i wanna recreate this house in The Sims,so i need the house plan!
Could you send me the house plan?

you should consider replacing the pond with a new jacuzzi!!.. 😀 or a beautiful fountain at least? 🙂

you should take the bars from the windows, spray paint them some crazy colours and put them in the garden for some vines to grow on

check this out, mr. Kate! It's full of nice house ideas!
I hope that's inspiring, good luck renovating 🙂

Hi Kate! I love your videos! I LOVE the greenish colored shelf in the dining room and I'd think it'd look GREAT if you picked the white color for the walls. I'd like to see it pop! But it's your house, do what you want. 🙂 congratulations, by the way!

Do a pretty wall glaze in the living room maybe in a sea foam blue or a pale coral...

ooh that would look nice! We went with white so we can add pops of color with our decorations! Thanks for watching Kiera.

Congratulations on the lovely new home, what an exciting time! I can't wait to see how it all comes together, the kitchen is wonderful. I see lots of pies in your future! Also can't wait for that guest room to turn into a little nursery 😉

hehe! Thanks so much Nina. We're happy with it so far, but we still have a lot of work that needs to be done. And we both love pie, so I'm glad you see those in our future. 🙂

Omg such a cute house!! I'd love to know how u are gna store all your clothes Kate?... Is a major clean out in the works?:) congrats again ! Looking forward to seeing the Reno !

Hi Michelle! Yeah, we're definitely going to need to redo the closet and make room for ALL my clothes. haha Glad you're liking everything so far.

Can't wait to see all the changes! What colors are you thinking of using? I bought my house almost two years ago and I still can't make up my mind! I'm too scared I'll chose funky colors.

Hi Maria! We're going with a blank canvas for the walls. A nice white. That way we an add color here and there with our own decor. hehe Glad you get to go through the fun of renovating with us. xox

That guest bathroom is such a rare find. I love the original vanity. the kitchen is really cute too. I love original features. It's great that you are going to work with them. So many people rip them out and destroy what can't be replaced. I think they add character. What a fun adventure 🙂 Congratulations

Thank you Emma for all the positive feedback! I agree, why replace the irreplaceable? I'm glad you're liking the series so far. Stay tuned we're planning on making a bunch of these. 😉

OMG! Mr. Kate & Joey Congrats on the new adventure!!! I bought a house with my, now hubs, about a year ago and have yet to begin the major renovations that we want to do. I'm going to say now that I think your new web series will be a Godsend for me 🙂 I can't wait to see what you guys do with the place.

Yay Carla! So glad to hear it. We're making this series to help inspire people like YOU who need just a little boost of inspiration to make their own house a home. Lets go through this process together girl!

OMG This is the most exciting yet! I'm excited for you and Joey. You two are but the cutest couple ever. I love the house and it's vintage feel. I am so hyped for the next episodes. I'm such a kitchen person so I would love to see what you do with it and the backyard too! Good luck and have fun!

Aw Thanks Anne! Yeah we'll for sure make episodes on the kitchen and backyard in the future, so stay tuned. Glad you're liking the series so far. xox

The previous owners REALLY liked their paint, didn't they? So many different colours smushed together- it's overwhelming. I loooove the house, especially how it has huge windows, so gorgeous and light. I can't wait to see more! Especially with such wonderful hosts. Congratulations guys!

Thanks so much Sasha. We got rid of that icky paint and think it looks so much better! Thanks again for watching. xox

Wow what a beautiful house, I'm sure you will make it a beautiful home. I can't wait to see your videos about it. And you're such a cute couple together, I wish you all the luck! X Patricia
(I'm sorry if I didn't write this correct, I'm Dutch so I'm not used to write in English)

Patricia your English was great! I'm so glad you're liking our videos. We're going to keep them coming and do more and more to make our house a home. Thanks again for watching and the positive feedback. I really love it! xox

Congratulations Kate! Loving the vintage vibe from the house <3 just wondering ain't you worried that strangers will come to your house since they can see the outside of the house and will stalk you

haha Rose, I don't think anyone will stalk me (PLEASE NOOOOO!) I'm glad you like the house, we're really enjoying it too! 🙂

Kate! You could easily mural a wall since you have so much wall! I can't wait to see what you do and how you fill up the space with your unique style. I am interested in seeing how you set up the dining room and wallpaper the ceiling. And also create a bar x3

Hi Rachel! Well we'll be sure to have videos coming up with the dining room and wallpaper, so stay tuned my girl. xox

Cant wait to see what u do to the place!! U need to let us follow you during the transformation!! Such a beautiful house!!

Thank you! So glad you like it and want to come along for the wild ride ; ) we'll be sure to share everything! xoxo

Gosh, what a stunning house, Kate! Congratulations! I know you'll make it even more adorable. I really want to see the whole renovation process! I watched the video like ten times!!

About the pond: there was one in our backyard, and we had to get rid of it - there were a LOT of mosquitoes flying around and there were also tadpoles in it. No matter how many times we changed the water, they would still appear.
But, if the previous owners didn't complain about it, a pond is a cute addition to a backyard! xoxo

Thank you! So glad you want to see the process, we'll definitely be sharing everything with you along the way.

Good note about the pond! We were worried about mosquitoes. Someone told me to use a little mineral oil which will add a film on the top of the water that prevents the mosquitos from laying their eggs but we haven't tried that yet since the pond is just filled with dead leaves right now ; /

Congrats, such a sweet house. Love all the Spanish details, something we don't see in our area of the country. I'm with Shelah about keeping with the original vibe of the home. Excited to see what you do.

Thank you so much! I agree, I definitely want to honor the original style of the house with our updates. Thanks for your comment! xx

LOVE the house! And perfect timing: my boyfriend and I just bought a house too. First renovation project: the bathroom. Can't wait to see what you do with yours! Will keep checking in for inspiration! x

Oh perfect! Let us know if you have any tips when you do your bathroom! Congrats on your new home and thanks for commenting! xx

Really love the video, the house and the owners!!!

Thanks Peggy! Love you too!! xx

Oh my god, Kate, that house is adorable! It looks so cosy and homely, yet it provides so much space and light - i cannot wait what happens as soon as you let creativity flow 🙂 Especially since I plan to move in with the boyfriend later this year! Exciting times ahead!

Yaay how exciting! I love the light too, such a happy place! I can't wait to get into the creative projects too and I'll make sure to share everything with you all. Thanks for your support and good luck with your move! xoxo

Shelah Phillipsen

Congratulations!!!! Adorable home Kate and Joey! I love it and most of the changes you need to make are cosmetic like the painting. My advice or suggestion would be to keep as much as you can original to the period of the home you can or find "new" period pieces to replace the old ones. So many people update these beautiful old homes with modern fixtures and finishes and it ruins the lines and story of the home. Sorry Joey, but I agree the floor in the master has to be looks fake. me a clawfoot tub. You didn't say if you had a basement in this house but if so make sure you have the floor reinforced below the bathroom if you are going to put in a cast iron clawfoot tub...very heavy. Again, congratulations you two! Looking forward to more of your new home adventures!

Thank you Shelah! Haha I'm glad you agree with me about the floors, they need to get refinished ASAP!

Good note about the reinforcement for the tub, we don't have a basement but we have a large crawl space and gigantic attic. I'll be sure to check before we get a big heavy tub.

Totally agree with you about honoring the period of the house. I hate when people slap modern finishes on things and it looks like a weird mish-mash of styles. I want to be true to the original style while at the same time infusing our personalities and giving Joey some of that "newness" he's craving.... it's going to be a fun challenge!

Thanks so much for your comment and keep in touch throughout the process! So nice to have such insightful readers/watchers like you! xoxo
