Abby asks: My daughter is painting her room white, and she has no idea what to put in it! Her favorite color is coral and favorite pattern is zebra print and she doesn’t have wood floors in her room. What should we do?!
My answer: Hi Abby! I love your daughter’s flair! I feel like I already know her fun personality just from her preferences for coral and zebra. Even though coral tends to be a bright color and zebra a loud pattern, there are definitely ways to incorporate them into a well-balanced and perfectly decorated room. It helps that your daughter has white walls, so they can act as accents, rather than being the stars of the show. I made a collage above of how I would style a white room with some coral and zebra touches, and compiled a few tips below to help when you design!
P.S. Check out this collage on my Polyvore page to get all the product details!
- Use discretion: Generally, when working with bolder hues or patterns, it’s best to let them punctuate and accessorize a space, rather than lead it. No coral and zebra bedding, please! Chose 1 bigger piece and 1 or 2 smaller pieces of each for the room.
- Create a color scheme: Pairing the coral and zebra, which can be loud on their own, with muted and sophisticated colors like brass, mustard, and navy will bring in balance and also flow, making it seem less like sporadic pops of boldness and more like a color story unfolding across the space.
- Zebra doesn’t have to be black and white: To incorporate the pattern in a room without the stark contrast of the black and white stripes (which can be overwhelming to the eye) consider zebra with brown and white or grey and white stripes. A more faithful B&W zebra can be brought in as a small accent, but if it’s going to be a major piece, like the carpet above, it’s better to go subtle!
- Don’t forget texture!: Now that you’ve got the accent colors locked in, make the room feel fully lived in and polished with white textured items. A piece of coral and a white fluffy pillow will make the room seem more sumptuous and dynamic.
