      Hey Mya!!

I love the idea of a bedroom/ beauty room!! Beyond!! I see your struggle in a room without natural light … but luckily, that is a super simple thing to fix!!

Get creative with hanging lights, maybe some light cord kits? (This one or this one are cute!) Then create yourself a traditional vanity set up with a desk, and vanity light mirror, so you have light coming from different angles! A good way to style would be with a pendant light hanging from the ceiling on either side of the mirror, getting balance and symmetry in there, too!

If you don’t want to or can’t hang lights, sconces will work, too! Think like the ones we installed for Joslyn’s place!!

      Hope this helps!!

      Go slay, girl!!

      XOXO,

      Kate

        Hey Holly!

What I see here is an opportunity to really reassess your things, instead of just accepting the amount and specific things you own and finding a different way of rearranging them. Since you’re tight on space, purge any extra stuff that might just be lingering. I know many people are big fans of the KonMari method!

If you’ve already gone through this step and or cannot find anything you need to get rid of, focus on clearing the space and making it as zen as possible. Think vertically with storage, installing shelves on the walls and keeping the floorspace and desk space as free and clear as possible. The best way to make your room look bigger is to not overwhelm it!

        Hope this helps!

        XOXO,

        Kate

          Hey Nora!

So exciting that you’ll have a whole empty room to design in and decorate!! Since you are low on built-in organization, I would say to DIY it and build your own! Make an entire wall into a desk station with built in cabinets like we did in the Cous Cous room here at Mr. Kate Studios!

You can get that bookshelf-esque look with modular pieces, like we did with Patrick Starrr’s closet! Super simple and customizable, and great for organization!

For the rest of the room, I would say to put out a cute area rug and reading chair in the corner, since this desk set up will leave a lot of floor open still! Make it cozy, yet highly functional!

Have fun decorating! Let me know how it comes out!

          XOXO,

            Hey Phoebe!

If you go with that dark grey with the cabinets, I’d say to keep all the other tones and colors going into the space light — especially if you only have one window!! Try white quartz countertop which is very durable (like a Caeserstone – they sell at Home Depot etc.) or porcelain slab like we did in OMG We Bought A House!!

Then, a pretty subway tile backsplash with grey grout would be really pretty! And some brushed nickel or brass cabinet pulls!!

            Hope this helps!

              Hey!!

Thanks for posting!! Looks like a great start in your living room!

I notice that your dining room chairs are a deeper purple color, so those would be great to upcycle to get them more in line with the neutral color scheme you like! You can try painting the fabric, like we did in this episode of Breaking Beige! It was so much fun and totally reinvented the pieces to fit our design. Then finish off that dining area by adding a pretty centerpiece on the table like a long planter with succulents for some greenery.

Try to find slip covers for the couch and chairs, they make a lot that stretch to fit furniture of all shapes and sizes!! Surefit is a good brand and is sold on Overstock.

You have that nice light carpet, but a bigger area rug would really anchor the big furniture perfectly. Maybe something in a grey tone? I’m loving this one.

Keep going with that gallery wall idea, and build more frames around the tv on that wall! You can check out my tutorial on gallery walls for some inspiration! Then, maybe add decals or do a mural or wallpaper on that low wall around the two doors. So much potential in that wall space!

              I hope this helps!

              XO,

                Hey!!

Thanks for posting on the forums!! And for all of the support, it means so much!

It can definitely be tricky to transition a childhood bedroom into a more adult and sophisticated space. If you’re unsure of what you want out of the room right now, I would say to pick out 3 of your favorite room images on Pinterest (check out my boards here!) and see if there are an similarities or common threads between them that can identify elements of your design taste.

From there, you should remove all the furniture from the room and paint the walls a fresh, light color. Having the room empty will help you reimagine the floor plan from a fresh perspective, which will help it feel new and different.

Check out different bedroom layouts and images to see what you like and would work best for you. Some inspo images to get you started:

Lighting is also key to making a room feel bright and happy, so change out the ceiling fixture or if there isn’t one, bring in 2 or 3 lamps!

I hope this helps! Have fun re-decorating!

                XO,

                Kate

Ahhhh you guys these are all so good! I’m constantly impressed with all of you Little Misters! I have to do a shoutout to our Breaking Bad costumes and our friends’ Alex and Justin’s Pat (from SNL) costumes. All of them were DIY (I did Joey’s Walter White/Heisenberg beard and bald cap) and I tried to look like Jesse but ended up looking more like a dirty faced 12 year old. And their Pat costumes were jeans and a western shirt stuffed with a pillow and a curly wig and glasses… so good!

Then of course, there were last year’s zombie costumes… http://mrkate.com/2015/10/11/omg-halloween-special/ – I was cruise ship Zombie (tragically perished while on a Caribbean cruise) and Joey was lawn mower zombie ; )))

Love you all! Keep up the posts!!!

                    Hi Angelina!!

Thanks for the photos! Those were super helpful in getting some inspiration and ideas in your room!

I would say the first thing you can do to get that relaxing, bohemian vibe is to paint your walls white or a super light color. Maybe a pale grey with white tribal patterns or decals?!

A great way to get some storage is to convert an entire wall into a storage system!! If you check out the custom closet we did for Patrick Starrr, you can get inspired (or maybe even use the Pax system for your own room! It’s totally customizable!) These closets come with or without doors so you can choose that finish, as well.

                    Inspiration:

(Source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/AVoYyqe7XquxiO5rzNSNsu-NKs4LgAaWbU4_S99ldKz6IYz5i0cMs6M/) You see how the wall on the side of the bed is actually a closed closet and drawers?

(Source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/266697609155470141/) I love this mirrored finish on the closet doors! So chic!

Have you seen the basket canopy project in A Hot Glue Gun Mess? I think that bohemian, yet DIY-ed look could be cute for your room, especially considering your inspo pics!! Also the sand paper art!!

Speaking of baskets, they are a great bohemian option for storage as well. The idea is to give everything a place that isn’t out in the open!!

                    I hope this helps!!

                    XOXO,

                    Kate

                      Hey Latisha!!

Good for you for starting a private practice, that’s so exciting!! For this kind of an environment, I would say to keep a neutral palette and bring in black and white art, mixed metals, and wood tones so the design and look is complex but there isn’t one color to influence people’s moods.

A trick to get these kind of textural layers is to shop at flea markets for pieces with character. Don’t be afraid to mix colors of metal and tones of wood if everything else is neutrals or whites and creams.

                        Hey Veronica!!

First of all, great choice on the navy blue for the futon! It is such an understated yet always chic color. The key for futons is that they need pretty throw pillows to dress them up. I would say to add light toned throw pillows in color block patterns, and a throw blanket folded along the top back of the futon for added dimension (but also functionality in case you’re in the mood to cuddle up all cozy!). A large piece of art above the futon couch can make it feel less heavy and more balanced in the space, and this is also nice because you can convey any mood you want through art or photographs! But I would say to make sure the art has colors that compliment the throw pillows.

Adding an area rug can also will help soften the futon. Another idea is to style the shelves with more light colored items to contrast the dark brown. If you check out the recent Beauty Room makeover I did for Patrick Starrr (see here!: http://mrkate.com/2016/10/01/beauty-room-makeover-patrick-starrr/) you’ll see just how many colors you can use in one room!! Get inspired by that!!

Hope this helps! Have fun decorating!

                          Hey Phoebe!

Sounds like you already have a lot planned out, which is awesome! Bohemian design is easy to accomplish by shopping at flea markets and thrift stores, which is so much fun because you get to go on pretty much a treasure hunt! Collect some frames in different sizes and colors and do a collage wall with blown up photos (kind of like in this Gallery Wall post: http://mrkate.com/2016/09/15/how-to-create-a-gallery-wall-3-ways/) or DIY abstract art (like this adult fingerpainting!: http://mrkate.com/2016/02/23/diy-finger-painting-wall-art/). A collage of frames will add some design complexity.

If you have the room, I would say to add that comfy chair and table or side table. Look at thrift stores and get anything you like, doesn’t have to be a specific style as long as it will physically fit in the space. Bring in some other colors and personality by finding a cute throw pillow for the chair. If you do a collage wall on one wall, then hang a big round mirror on the other wall, this will create a nice balance so there isn’t too much competition between walls!

                          I hope this helps!

                          XOXO,

                              Hey Samantha!

Thanks for posting!! I think it’s great that you have such inspiration and direction for where you want to grow your business! I can tell you, from experience, the best thing you can do to really grow your business and your brand is put time into it. 30 minutes here and 30 minutes there is too scattered a manner to get the kind of big thinking you need done.

As much as it’s hard to look at your life and decide what you will cut time out of, the only way to grow your own business is to invest time. And it is an investment. A good way to go about this might be enrolling in a creative business or design class that meets once or twice a week in the evenings. I did an extension program at UCLA, which a lot of colleges and universities offer for reasonable prices. This could be good just to give you a structure and set time to focus on this aspect of your life every week, with someone else giving you assignments and you giving yourself the trial-run to really test your enthusiasm about pursuing the business full time.

I believe in you! Being creative and entrepreneurial is amazing, the world needs people like you!

                              Best of luck!

                              XOXO,

                                Hey Emily!!

Thanks for posting!! I’m not too well-versed in medical bracelets, but I have seen some designs that definitely blend functionality and fashion, like the Lauren’s Hope bracelets (so cute!)  I would opt for a style that is a little more classic, so that it goes with many different outfit styles but never looks out of place.

Wearing this bracelet all the time definitely gives you great incentive and opportunity to have amazing arm candy game. Some of the coolest girls I knew growing up always had stacks of bracelets on their wrists. Layering is the key to a great bracelet look! Think like Kathy Rose of Roseark (inspo pics here and here), or maybe add in a watch too for an always classy ensemble (inspo pics here and here)! This way, you can always bring in elements that resemble your personality and have the best reason to treat yourself to a bracelet now and then!

I hope these tips and inspiration help!!

That’s a really great color combination you have going on! But one thing I notice is that it is very “warm” toned — which is probably why you didn’t love the cream, since it has a yellow undertone!

For the cabinets, I would go for a cool white. This will totally freshen up the color combo of the walls and floors, and look amazing with either brass or brushed nickel hardware! Just a little cool tone in there should make a world of difference!
